I completed #19 in Newport, Rhode Island yesterday. Louis Rock and Roll Marathon with my friend Matt Shobe (now at BigDoor; was one of the co-founders of FeedBurner). Marathon #19 in the “run a marathon in each of the 50 states” is done. While my running base is great, I made three mistakes. Way to go gang!

L3Cs were first formed in 2008, and are currently only legal in Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, and Wyoming, as well as the federal jurisdictions of the Crow Indian Nation of Montana, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe. B corp, or Benefit Corporation. What about the rest of us?

Founders include some Brown University engineering students and and a computer science major at the University of Rhode Island. BTW, we recently posted on the upcoming 2011 Rhode Island Business Plan Competition (which will award nearly $200,000 to start ups in Rhode Island.).

Now, you can create a benefit corporation in: Arkansas, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington D.C., with many more states in the pending legislation phase.

Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia met at the Rhode Island School of Design and became roommates in San Francisco in 2007. They were joined by a third co-founder, Nathan Blecharczyk, who brought programming expertise. The website is clean and very intuitive—not surprising, I guess, when two of the founders are designers.
