A few weeks ago I read Jaron Lanier’s Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now. He makes a reasonable case (obviously with a lot of room to dispute individual points) that social media is “bad” in general and a source of concern. The second concern is that he conflates Google with social media.

Is Astroturfing Coming To Social Media?

It’s when this becomes a social media strategy. Once someone builds this into a social media dashboard and automates the “identify-keyword, add, @reply-message” function, it’ll get yucky fast. My concern isn’t the one off dynamic, which I don’t think has much real impact.
