Q316 State of Venture Capital Update With Cooley

Feld Thoughts

In addition to creating some certainty about the dynamics in our government going forward, it’ll also result in a decrease of political advertising in all media, which I generally think will enhance my life although some adtech and media companies will be bummed out about it. Each quarter Cooley does a VC market update. This quarter they interviewed me as part of it on Quarterly VC Update: Brad Feld on the State of Venture Capital Investing.

Going Beyond Amazon: A New Model for Authors, Retailers, and Publishers

Feld Thoughts

If a media company wants all of their largest brands to provide ebooks, each brand can build its own community and stay connected around ebooks. As many of you know, I have a keen interest in the future of digital publishing.

What’s Happening Today That No One Sees?

Feld Thoughts

Subsequently, Amy and I went on a binge the past few days of other media around this, including the movie Too Big To Fail (which is really about what happened in the fall of 2008) and Inside Job (which covers a broader time range, but focused on 2005 – 2008).

Getting Your Demos Right

Feld Thoughts

One of them, Oblong , as been working on spacial computing since John Underkoffler’s early research in the 1990′s at the MIT Media Lab. I get demos every day. Multiple times a day. I don’t want to see a powerpoint deck – I want to play with something.

TruthRank vs. PageRank

Feld Thoughts

Some of the drivers of the new Skepticism are all the problems with media, climate change, and probably some other things I’m not thinking of.” I was at dinner a few weeks ago with my long time friend and first business partner Dave Jilk. We ended up talking about how difficult it is to determine signal from noise, fact from fiction, truth from b t, and b t from complete-and-total-b t. I recently hit the wall with all the political stuff that was popping up everywhere.

A Venture Capital History Perspective From Jack Tankersley

Feld Thoughts

Many of the industry funds were wildly successful (in sectors such as media communications, health care, consumer, etc.), In January, Jerry Neumann wrote a long and detailed analysis of his view of the VC industry in the 1980’s titled Heat Death: Venture Capital in the 1980’s. While I don’t know Jerry very well, I like him and thought his post was extremely detailed and thoughtful. However, there were some things in it that didn’t ring true for me.

Stuff That Caught My Attention This Morning

Feld Thoughts

It’s almost entirely tech related, as I stay away from mainstream media during the week (e.g. After all these years, I’m still a heavy RSS user. Every morning I click on my Daily folder in Chrome, open it up, and spend whatever time I feel like on it. The vast majority of what I read is in Feedly and includes my VC Collection as well as a bunch of other stuff.

A Confusing Social Media Birthday

Feld Thoughts

But I was really surprised by the number of people that used my birthday as a way to “get something” without “giving something” other than a few words in a social media message. The post A Confusing Social Media Birthday appeared first on Feld Thoughts. I turned 48 on December 1st. I took a week off the grid (from the Wednesday before Thanksgiving until the Wednesday after my birthday) – part of my quarterly off the grid routine with Amy.

Our respect for Elizabeth and Sue, combined with our passion for their objective, led us to invest personally in MergeLane, which has secured strong support from a tremendous group of mentors , investors, media , and the Boulder startup community. Get Ready For Q115 Fundraising Insanity

Feld Thoughts

As we enter the time of year where every media-related thingy publishes it’s “best of 2014″ and “predictions for 2015″ lists, I simply pass on participating in all of them and read none of them. One of the dynamics of going away for a month off the grid is that you come back to a wall of data.

Transparent Funding Announcements

Feld Thoughts

After he posted it, he sent around the link to a few prominent people in the tech media. When I pondered it, I realized how divergent the media was becoming from what entrepreneurs were thirsty for in terms of substance. Interestingly, the media wrote more this time. But when I go back and read the media stories, they are still overly focused on the amount of the financing, rather than the story behind it. We are in a cycle again where how much you raise is the story.

Foundry Group Urges Boulder To VOTE NO on 300 and 301

Feld Thoughts

Send it to your friends via email and social media. This year’s local election in Boulder is a critical one. The city that we love risks shutting its doors.

Vanishing Mediary

Feld Thoughts

The media wants hero stories. The most glorious media story arc is rags to riches to rags with redemption back to riches. I love the phrase vanishing mediary. This is what I aspire to be. It’s the opposite of a visible intermediary. In our ego-fueled world, many people want to be front and center. Leaders are told to lead from the front, even if all they do is get up on a white horse and exit stage left as soon as the battle starts.

A DevOps Tent Big Enough for Everyone

Feld Thoughts

If you are going to have a DevOps community media site, it is hard to imagine a better domain to for it to live at. But media content is not the only mission. My partner Ryan McIntyre says that any company doing business on the web should be practicing some form of DevOps. One of the biggest trends in tech today is DevOps, which is closely tied into Agile, Cloud, PaaS, and SDN.

Hollywood’s Massive Miss on Strong AI

Feld Thoughts

The MIT Media Lab was created at the same time – opening in 1985 – and there was a revolution at MIT around AI and computer science. So while I didn’t study at LCS or the Media Lab, I was deeply influenced by what was going on around me. Strong AI has been on my mind a lot lately.

As a bonus, I’ve been hearing Amazon referred to regularly by mainstream media (and some people in the tech world) as a Silicon Valley company.

How To Predict The Future

Feld Thoughts

By day he works on web and social media for HP. I plotted the growth in capacity of magnetic platter hard drives and flash drives back in 2006 or so, and saw that flash would overtake magnetic media in 2016. Today’s post is a guest post from William Hertling, author of the award-winning Avogadro Corp: The Singularity Is Closer Than It Appears and A.I. Apocalypse , near-term science-fiction novels about realistic ways strong AI might emerge.

Book: No Better Time

Feld Thoughts

I’m tired of the classic boom bust popular media story arc of “hero emerges from nothing, the hero does amazing things, bad things happen and the hero crashes, watch how the hero is no longer a hero, the hero fights and claws his way out of the cellar and rises again to be a hero.” I’ve been reading a lot lately. On an almost daily basis, someone out in the world sends me a physical book, which I love.

The Circle

Feld Thoughts

We’ve somehow elevated social media metrics to the same level as money in the context of self-worth. A bunch of my tech friends have asked me to suggest a book to read over the holidays. My unambiguous recommendation is The Circle by Dave Eggers. I think it’s one of the best books I read this year. I’m an unabashed Eggers fan. My favorites of his are A Heartbreaking Work Of Staggering Genius: A Memoir Based on a True Story and Zeitoun.

Why Don’t We Make Learning A Computer Language A Requirement In High School?

Feld Thoughts

Once a year Howard Lindzon gets together a bunch of his friends at the intersection of financing, tech, media, and entrepreneurship, we descend on The Del in Coronada, and have an awesome 48 hours together. I spent this weekend at LindzonPalooza. Many interesting and stimulating things were said, but one I remember was from Peter Pham over dinner. It was a simple line, “why do we teach languages in junior high and high school but not a computer language?”

The Future Is Enchanted Objects, Not Glass Slabs

Feld Thoughts

I was a huge fan and an early customer, but not an investor, in one of his companies ( Ambient Devices ) and we share a lot of friends and colleagues from MIT and the Media Lab. On Saturday, I read the final draft of a magnificent book by David Rose. The book is titled Enchanted Objects: Design, Human Desire and the Internet of Things. I’ve known David for many years.

Scaling Techstars Horizontally

Feld Thoughts

Virgin Media Accelerator (London). There are two common ways to scale a system – horizontally or vertically. If you are a software engineer, you probably get this instinctively. If you don’t know what this is, let’s work with the simple Wikipedia definition which is pretty good. Scale Vertically (or “scale up”): Add resources to a single node in a system, typically involving the addition of CPUs or memory to a single computer.

Accelerating Technology Change and Continuous Learning

Feld Thoughts

They didn’t just “grow up with social media,” they grew up with “social media that constantly changes.” ” In fact, not only do they keep up with the changes on a particular social media service, they are always exploring the latest new services. At dinner last week, my long time friend Dave Jilk (we just celebrated our 30th friendship anniversary) tossed a hypothesis at me that as people age, they resist adopting new technologies.

Feld Thoughts

And, if you look at some of the successful companies we have had from our previous investing at Mobius Venture Capital, you’d see market leaders like Postini, Return Path, FeedBurner, Rally, Stratify, NewsGator, and Sling Media. A Postcard A Day

Feld Thoughts

The connection will be through both space and time, using a media (postcard) that current generations rarely use any more. I’ve described this magic approach to staying connected with family when you are far away three times in the past few days. The first time was to a set of entrepreneurs in TechStars New York who were from Vancouver and have spouses and significant others back home.

The Microsoft Accelerator (Powered By TechStars) Is A Hit And It’s Expanding

Feld Thoughts

Each company gets $20k in funding, mentorship from top entrepreneurs, investors and Microsoft executives, $60K in Azure credit, office space, training and support, and demo day to pitch to investors, media, and industry influentials.

Games Where The Only Winning Move Is Not To Play

Feld Thoughts

By now the blogosphere, twitterverse, and even mainstream media is abuzz with the absurd decision that Yahoo has made to sue Facebook over ten software patents with the assertion that Facebook’s entire business is based on Yahoo’s patented inventions.

Book Cover Blurbs Should Die

Feld Thoughts

It’s an artifact of the publishing business that existed before “earned media” – blog posts, reviews, etc. I think we should be focusing on real earned media, real reviews, real substantive support, rather than marketing nonsense the industry has been pushing since the early 1900s. As we gear up to release Uncommon Stock , our first FG Press book, we just had an internal discussion about book blurbs. The concept of a blurb was apparently invented in 1907.

Long Form to Nano Form

Feld Thoughts

Sure, the book is competing with a lot of other media types, but reading (and writing) seems to persist quite successfully. As my newest book, Startup Opportunities: Know When To Quit Your Day Job , has begun shipping on Kindle (order now and give me feedback, leave a review) I’ve been thinking a lot about writing lately. Startup Opportunities took 18 months to write and most of the slowness was me, not my co-author Sean Wise.
