AFWERX has a program called SBIR , which is a way that startups can work with the US Air Force with little or no hassles. Last week, I was in New York and decided to stop by the Air Force Pitch Day. What a great experience. It’s so nice to see when government organizations figure out how to effective engage with startups, and then scale it! At Air Force Pitch Day, the US Air Force awarded 51 contracts, each in 15 minutes or less, valued at a total of $8.75M. MORE
Thanks to organizations like DIU we’ve gotten much better at tech scouting; finding promising technologies that might have a military application, getting them on that initial contract – on a SBIR contract or an OTA prototyping contract. MORE
Several sources (including Startup by Elizabeth Edwards ) estimate that $2-3 billion per year is awarded to very early stage companies by federal government grants (mostly SBIRs). At $100,000 or so per grant, perhaps 2-3000 pre-seed and seed/startup companies receive SBIRs and other government grants per year. For years there has been a pervasive opinion across the entrepreneurial landscape that the US has a shortage of capital required to startup and grow new ventures. MORE
There are three existing sources for funding defense innovation: COTS/GOTS validation (testing whether off-the-shelf products can be used); Concept Validation and Technology Advancement ; and SBIR/STTR funds – there’s over >$1B per year in the DoD SBIR program alone.). A good place to start looking is the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, which is a lifeline for high-tech startups. In the US, many entrepreneurs see grants as “free money,” since they are not loans and don’t have to be repaid. A grant is not an equity investment, so the entrepreneur doesn’t have to give up a stake in the company either. Typically they can be used to fund product development and commercialization that would otherwise require outside investors.

Despite the fact that the grant community looks impossibly messy for a startup to navigate, a good starting place is Grants.gov , where you can find a fairly comprehensive directory of federal grants (especially SBIR-related solicitations), searchable by keyword/agency/funding-type/date. A few weeks ago, Fred Wilson discussed the role of government grants in helping launch tech companies.

SBIR and STTR programs, the Torch Program’s funding for new ventures was limited to seed funding the front end. I just spent a few weeks in Japan and China on a book tour for the Japanese and Chinese versions of the Startup Owners Manual. In these series of 5 posts, I thought I’d share what I learned in China. All the usual caveats apply. I was only in China for a week so this a cursory view.

Now that President Barack Obama’s economic stimulus package has been out for a while, including $50 billion aimed at alternative-energy initiatives, applying for grants has become the rage for high-tech startups. I applaud the initiative, and encourage startups in this direction, but there are costs.

Still, you can’t ignore the possibility of securing non-dilutive capital from sources such as SBIR ( Small Business Innovative Research ) or business development grants from state and local governments. SBIR often offers grants to projects that are deemed risky by the VCs or equity investors. The global healthcare industry is in flux like never before.

Several sources (including Startup by Elizabeth Edwards ) estimate that $2-3 billion per year is awarded to very early stage companies by federal government grants (mostly SBIRs). At $100,000 or so per grant, perhaps 2-3000 pre-seed and seed/startup companies receive SBIRs and other government grants per year. For years there has been a pervasive opinion across the entrepreneurial landscape that the US has a shortage of capital required to startup and grow new ventures.

I want to reach out to see who has been affected by the Coronavirus / COVID-19 and let everyone know how the Capital Factory community is rising to the challenge. This is a terrible disaster that we still don’t understand the full implications of yet, but we need to adapt to the “new normal” and try to keep our lives moving forward safely. There are three existing sources for funding defense innovation: COTS/GOTS validation (testing whether off-the-shelf products can be used); Concept Validation and Technology Advancement ; and SBIR/STTR funds – there’s over >$1B per year in the DoD SBIR program alone.). The Office of Naval Research (ONR) has been one of the largest supporters of innovation in the U.S. Now they are starting to use the Lean Innovation process (see here and here ) to turn ideas into solutions.

I founded MoveableCode back in 2009, initially to do some mobile Augmented Reality research on a National Science Foundation SBIR grant. Today’s post is a guest post from my friend Nicholas Napp. We first met five years ago and while I’ve never invested in anything he’s done, I’ve tried to be helpful along the way. Nick is currently running a company called MoveableCode and has a great Kickstarter campaign going for his latest product Incantor (Magic Made Real).
