- [Venture Capital] Utilities vs Networks
Venture Capital and Technology Web/TechIt's interesting to see a network, Instagram , starting to replace the iPhone's native camera application in many users' daily usage of their phones. I see this in my kids' behavior all the time. When they want to take a photo, they open Instagram, not the camera application. In the PC era, when applications got bundled into the operating system, they became instoppable. All the competitive apps got left in the dust.

hacking education Venture Capital and Technology I feel badly for Paul Graham because he's being made out to be something I am sure he is not. - [Venture Capital] In Defense Of Free
mobile Venture Capital and Technology Web/TechI have written so much about free here at AVC that it should be called AVFree. In fact, I've even written a post with this exact same title (almost exactly seven years ago, the summer we invested in twitter, zynga, and tumblr). I haven't touched this subject much in the past few years but given that the topic has been in the air in the tech blogosphere , I thought I'd address it again.
- [Venture Capital] The Power Of Diversification
If you assume that the average startup has a 33% chance of making money for the investors, a 33% chance of returning capital, and a 33% chance of losing everything and that only 10% will make a big return (>10x), then you can model this out. Venture Capital and TechnologyI have written about this topic before but it's important and I want to say it again. Investing in startups is risky. If you make just one investment, you are likely going to lose everything.

- [Venture Capital] Some Perspective
stocks Venture Capital and TechnologyI don't disagree with PG when he says that Facebook's IPO performance (or lack thereof) has the potential to impact valuations in startup land. - [Venture Capital] Continuous Feedback
Venture Capital and TechnologyWe have a portfolio company that will remain nameless that does something I want to call out as super awesome. Every board meeting, as homework after the meeting, they ask each board member to fill out a simple Google Form with two questions; three things we are doing well and three things we need to do better. They've been doing that every board meeting that I've been to.
- [Venture Capital] Coming Of Age
But imitation is the finest form of flattery and I do like how Ben rolls on his blog and in the venture capital business. I'd like to talk this morning about how hard it is the come up in the venture capital game. I spent the first ten years (maybe 15) of my time in the venture business as a young VC trying to make it in the game and not really knowing how. When a young person asked me about getting in the venture capital business, I advise them not to.
- [Venture Capital] Who You Want On Your Board
One of the guys who taught me the venture capital business used to say "success is in inverse proportion to the number of VCs you have on your board." entrepreneurship Venture Capital and Technology" He was right. For a few reasons. First of all, most VCs get on your board by virtue of financing rounds you do. If you do a lot of financing rounds, you will collect enough VCs on your board to field a basketball team. And that sucks.

STEVE BLANK [Venture Capital] It’s About Women Running Startups
| WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 21, 2015
I thought we were going to talk about her product progress, so I was a bit taken aback by her most pressing question, “Why is it so hard for a woman to still get taken seriously by a venture capitalist?”. This raises an interesting question: is the credibility of female entrepreneurs in the eyes of New York VC’s something about the venture firms, or is it about the industries they are funding? What role does venture capital play?

I have never run a startup company. By Steve's measure, that is a weakness in my background and experience. And I agree that it is.
