CHICAGO WEEK PUNK WEDNESDAY: Rat Patrol by Naked Raygun - Sometimes I just sit back as my mind is blown apart with a torrent of sound. That is what it has been like to dig into 80’s Chicago hardcore band Naked Raygun. I knew nothing of their music prior to this week, and now I cannot stop playing them. Kind of classic 70’s Brit punk with American hardcore, they are in some ways like Husker Du in that regard with strong pop sensibilities to round out the hard edge.
You can get into endless debates about which is the best album, but I think it is good to start with the beginning with the Throb Throb album. Besides the stellar album cover art, it also has some of their most diverse set of songs mixing in all sorts of influences and styles. I could not decide on Metastasis or Rat Patrol, so I chose the lead off track which kicks off one of the big themes of war that threads its way throughout the album. Killer opening riff, a catchy chorus, and just great straight up punk.
