Commute Hacking, Epic Fail

So, yesterday I had this great idea that I was going to become a lot more productive by not driving myself places. I would use Lyft and Marta, and during the rides I’d be able to do work (mostly email, Slack, etc.) Potentially this would add 8 hours of work-time to my week!

And I gave it the old college try yesterday. I took two Lyfts, rode a Marta bus and took two Marta train rides.

But, what I failed to know about myself is that

I GET CAR SICK WHEN READING/WRITING WHEN IN A MOVING VEHICLE

Ugh. How did I not know this about myself?!

So, it doesn’t matter how efficient I can get my commute process, if I can’t work during the time then the added travel time (and added costs) aren’t going to make sense.

What I did learn is that, once I’m in town, I can probably take Marta more often than I typically consider. I’ll try to do that more, but in the spirit of being a better citizen and friend to the environment instead of being more productive.

But…ugh.

I feel your pain! I get car sick being a passenger sometimes. Which is why I’m normally the driver everywhere I go. Writing or reading in motion? Forget about it! (you can insert your favorite gangster voice here)

Hey, you didn’t know until you tried. Now you know!

Sit facing forward on the shady side of the train. Might help.

Actually Jeff, you may not have gotten car sick when you were younger. I remember as a child and teen, enjoying a good book when going on long car trips with the folks. Now however, I also get sick. i think that ability fades as we age like being able to read restaurant menus by candelight. Might be an opportunity for a motion compensation app. Not sure how/if it would work, but might be worth a try.

Yep, I think you’re 100% correct. I find rollercoasters are also more of a problem now than when I was younger.

Right? Too bad, all those possibilities… :)
