Data Sleuthing
You get to be in the data but it’s not your entire job: Love data but don’t necessarily want to just be in spreadsheets 100% of the time? User acquisition & retention are a great fit for people who are fluent with numbers but also totally fascinated by the “why” behind why people do things, and want to take advantage of patterns that emerge in the data to be smarter and more efficient.
Kate points out some good reasons for working at a startup. The one point that stood out most though was about the role of data in marketing. There is a very skewed vision of what marketing is these days. Some think marketing is all partying and fluff while some think it is all about data. Then there is this whole “growth hacker” trend. It makes you wonder what exactly a real marketer does.
The truth is that when marketing is done right, it is one of the most fascinating of fields in startups. Marketing straddles the disciplines of psychology, statistics, economics, sales, communications, and branding. The best way to describe it is data investigator, where some of the work is digging into data and some of the work is outside the datasets. It is putting on your sleuth hat to understand the why behind the data.
If this type of data sleuthing interests you, then you should definitely check out HowAboutWe and their current job openings. They are a startup that seems to get what true marketing is all about.
