SATURDAY JAZZ XMAS: The Christmas Song performed by Dexter Gordon - It is the holiday season and time to jazz up the brunch with come Christmas music. I could easily go with the standard fare like the timeless Vince Guaraldi Charlie Brown Christmas album or something by incomparable Ella Fitzgerald or even one of those jazz Christmas compilation albums. I probably would not be faulted for even going the Bing Crosby route or with the always satisfying Rat Pack.
But no, today is for Dexter Gordon and his transcendent version of the Mel Torme and Bob Wells classic holiday standard. Recorded for the Panther! album on Prestige, he transforms the lively pop tune into something boozy, bluesy, and wistful and is one of my favorite versions of the oft-recorded tune. The whole album is also quite excellent and showcases Dexter’s talents at the top of his game as one of the great improvisers of the jazz world.
