Gyoza, What Is It?
A favorite appetizer or snack food in Japan, the gyoza is simply a Japanese dumpling. Many pin the origin of the gyoza to the Chinese dumpling, called jiaozi, which the Japanese soldiers brought back home after WWII. In fact, the characters for jiaozi 餃子 are exactly the same as gyoza.
There are really no definite differences between Chinese and Japanese dumplings. That being said, gyoza will often have more garlic in the filling and the skins will be thinner/less doughy. Just like Chinese dumplings, gyoza can be fried, steamed or boiled and filled with a variety of fillings. However, the most common preparation (and our personal favorite) is the yaki-gyoza 焼き餃子 or pan-fried dumpling, very similar to the Chinese guotie 鍋貼. (via kingdumplr)
