Fu-Gee-La by Fugees - Though I grew up in Brooklyn and was surrounded by the sounds of hip-hop living on Flatbush, I never really got into it. In fact, it wasn’t until a friend from work roomed with me for a few months that I even bothered listening to any rap or hip-hop. He eventually became my best friend. The other thing that happened was that I adopted some of his music tastes and got into Nas, Wutang, Biggy and others. That was 1996.
That was the same year The Score dropped. They had their big hits, but the tunes I gravitated to were the ones not played to death on the radio like How Many Mics and Fu-Gee-La. While many of the lyrics reference Brooklyn and the its Haitian community, they originally hailed from South Orange, NJ and frequently threw shoutouts to the Garden State.
The Fugees may have only had two albums, they had an outsized influence on hip-hop. The Score blew up huge with versions of No Woman, No Cry and Killing Me Softly and ended up on many best of the year and best of the decade lists. And for someone that does not listen to much hip-hop, I still spin this album on a regular basis to this day.
