SATURDAY JAZZ BRUNCH: Autumn in New York by Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong - There are two times of year when I really find myself in a jazz type of mood. The first is early summer when I can sit out on the porch in the waning dusk when it is warm but not too warm. The other is when fall is in full swing and I take long walks in the cold, crisp air. That is when I turn to some Ella and Satchmo, which is about the most perfect combination for any meandering journey.
During 1956-58, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong got together for a series of recording on the Verve label. While I love Satchmo’s trumpet, what made this collaboration work was the rapport between them and how well the vocal styles came together. One of my favorite tracks is Autumn in New York, a Vernon Duke composition for the musical Thumbs Up. While it has been covered by all the greats, the duet by Ella and Louis with its stripped down arrangement makes their rendition truly special.
