MID-WEEK METAL SLUDGE: Devoid of Redemption by Pallbearer - By most accounts, this seems to be consensus pick for metal album of the year. The caveat is that that opinion is only held by music critics of the hipster variety. Last year they were fawning over black metal, and this year it is doom metal. Maybe next year they will exalt the great heights of late 80’s hair metal.
But enough of mocking critics, Pallbearer’s debut LP, Sorrow and Extinction, is pretty amazing for a band that only started recording in 2010. While recalling the glory of Black Sabbath, they definitely bring their own chops and make a mark on the doom genre. Foreigner is the track that gets the most play, but I like Devoid of Redemption as the most distinctive tune on the album. But really, any of the five tracks covering 50 minutes of psychedelic sludge are worthy of highlighting as there are no dull moments on the album.
