BEST METAL INSTRUMENTAL OF 2015: Apex by Enshine - A great instrumental can often tell a story better than a song with lyrics. Otherwise, it is just pointless noodling, which is the challenge with most instrumentals in metal.
Enshine has been a promising melodic death metal two-some for a few years back since they released their debut Origin. They returned this past fall with Singularity which quickly become a favorite of mine. There is literally not a single dud or low point on this album, and one tune, In Our Minds, is song of the year territory.
But we were talking about instrumentals before, and they close the album with the tune Apex. It is the perfect end note, balanced between technical brilliance with a story that evokes the feel of winter. You get the sense that you could put on a pair of headphones and become instantly transported to the northern reaches of Sweden looking out upon the tundra. Listen and check out the rest of the album on Bandcamp.
