Breaking the Block

I’ve been wrestling with a serious case of writers block of late.

Between raising the new fund, winding a couple companies down and the soul sucking headlines filling my feeds its been tough to muster the creative energy to put thoughts that I’d want to have down, down.

When you have an audience there are expectations that come along with that. There’s a theme here. And a quality level. And an expectation that’s been built up over all these years.

So, if I don’t feel like I can reach that bar, I don’t bother reaching.

But that’s taking a toll. I need a place to put down thoughts besides my draft folder. I need to hit publish.

Just ship.

Unfortunately, Tumblr has felt like it is in a tailspin. Hardly and of the folks I follow post here. The regulars are gone. And that’s been bumming me out.

Until today.

Today, I’m reimagining Tumblr as a blank slate. I’m going to assume nothing I write here will get read or distributed. That’s a new kind of freedom I haven’t felt online in a long time.

Because everywhere else comes with a set of expectations. Those expectations hang heavy sometimes. As time passes the weight builds.

This little ghost town here means a new kind of freedom I haven’t felt in a long time. Blank slates. Low expectations. And some creative freedom that I’ve been longing for.

So, this will be my space to break the blockage. If I write anything worthwhile, insightful or earth shattering I’ll tweet it or move it to Medium. But I’m going to enjoy the sinking ship that Tumblr has become to reconnect with writing. Sometimes about VC and startups, but sometimes not- which I’ve been reluctant to do given the nature of my audience here.

Onward.

Onward indeed, you never know who you may touch or how they may be positively influenced.
