Which Are More Legible: Serif or Sans Serif Typefaces?

Letter differentiation and rate of comprehension in reading. As a person with a visual impairment and who uses screen magnification software, I find sans serif easier to read online. A print publisher can control its own variables for the best product, but a web publisher has no control over the hardware and software of the user.
