After running Microsoft for 25 years, Bill Gates handed the reins of CEO to Steve Ballmer in January 2000. These misses weren’t in some tangential markets – missing search, mobile and the cloud were directly where Microsoft users were heading. 16 years later it’s just another software company. They had lots of these projects.

CRM became more sophisticated, resulting in detailed monthly statements and targeted direct marketing. The fact that we can get stuck at this level of soul searching is something that is rarely seen in other industries. Engineers initially failed to understand the new possibilities of the new paradigm.
