However, there are lots of companies that are making money from open source and freemium models. A friend of mine has a company that builds open source applications in spaces that are a bit less innovative than Elgg, but they do very well financially through the packaging and support models.

These are Java (from Sun),NET (from Microsoft), and three Open Source options: PHP, Python and Ruby. Its a powerful object oriented language, and is effectively Open Source. Java can be used in both Microsoft or Open Source environments. PHP is a widely-used Open Source web scripting language.

Im trying to create a technology enabled recruiting service for an unproven business model. In 2008 I was first time startup founder with no cash. Or Gimp, or the 1000s of other open source projects, built for free by software engineers. If you can't do that convincingly, go get investor money and hire a consultant.
