Currently, the easiest setup is with Rackspace, where Standing Cloud can automatically assign a billing account to you; this easy setup is coming soon for GoGrid and Amazon EC2. Through September 30, the only fees Standing Cloud is charging is for the server time and bandwidth usage; after that it will cost an additional $19.95/month

When I asked him how he would do it, he quite simply said Amazon – Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) and Amazon S3 for storage. Not too bad when you think that you can scale up or scale down pretty easily.

Jackie: I would recommend instead Amazons EC2 and S3 platforms. That said, I dont think EC2 is reliable enough to depend upon, and the entire reputation of a startup can hinge on that. The bandwidth and level of service many of these companies provide for merely hundreds of dollars a month makes it a no-brainer.

We put all of this infrastructure in an Exodus web hosting facility and had to pay for rack space, bandwidth and some management services if a disk failed, for example. At the time we viewed Amazon’s offering, EC2 as too nascent. We raised $16.5 million in our A round. Hardware ate just over 10% of the round.
