We are on the high end of the range, and I think expecting less would be unrealistic unless you are building something really simple (and therefore with limited inherent IP). The best technique is just to lease / rent dedicated servers from hosts like SoftLayer, The Planet, etc, and pay several hundred dollars a month out of your revenues.
