However, there are lots of companies that are making money from open source and freemium models. A friend of mine has a company that builds open source applications in spaces that are a bit less innovative than Elgg, but they do very well financially through the packaging and support models.

The negativity either impacted investment funding (venture capital fell off a cliff in 2009) or the customers they were targeted as was the case for Untitled Partners who were building a platform for fractional art ownership. Now I just need a business model. Failed founders seem to agree that a business model is important.

Im trying to create a technology enabled recruiting service for an unproven business model. Even though the business is making money now, its still a big risk for anyone involved. Or Gimp, or the 1000s of other open source projects, built for free by software engineers. Hes right on so many levels.

Are there types of companies, market segments, industries, or business models where PLG does not make sense? Obviously if you target enterprise customers, you usually have a very large ACV (Annual Contract Value) and the product usually is complex. For GitLab, we had an open source version of the product.
