One of the things I do as a founder of a later stage startup is to meet with early stage entrepreneurs to help them get their companies going. I don’t know any developers. Why was it ok for you to have no talent but a great idea and label yourself a co-founder of a company but advise against it for anyone else?

These are often 100% US-based at inception, but in my experience they are more likely to both open an office abroad and to sell abroad than a company without an immigrant founder. Fortunately, virtually all of these local VCs want to coinvest with reputable US VCs. . Determined Founders. They burnt their ships behind them.

Blogs weren’t popularized yet so it was an oddity for me to read the founder of a software company spewing out advice. This ended up developing into Visual Basic for Applications , the strategy for programmability in Microsoft Office. Joel met his co-founder for Fog Creek software and learned a valuable management lesson.
