But when done well it can really help get a company going fast, professionally and without the founders having to give up much (if any) equity - or bankrupting themselves. The founders may believe they are onto such a good idea that they don’t want to give up any equity. Should I offshore? Why bootstrap?

One of the things I do as a founder of a later stage startup is to meet with early stage entrepreneurs to help them get their companies going. The best composition is probably one engineer whose passion lies in the pixels on the screen and another engineer whose passion is making bits fly really fast through servers. and Google.

Typically engineering, QA, and support are offshore, while CEO, sales, and marketing are in the US. These are often 100% US-based at inception, but in my experience they are more likely to both open an office abroad and to sell abroad than a company without an immigrant founder. They may ask you to continue working and paying through the website, to boost their reputation there, or they may want to just go direct. Nothing essential that I disagree with you in your post, but when read by other people with minimal software engineering experience, they can have too high expectations. Either way is fine.
