When David Cohen and I came up with the idea for the Global Accelerator Network (GAN) in 2010, we counted roughly 100 accelerator programs around the US that were founded following the Techstars model. Some are major contributors to their startup communities. Provide some sort of seed capital to their founders.

I had witnessed a number of early-stage tech startups in LA raise seed capital from the Bay Area and relocate. and I thought if we brought the community together for common purpose we could create more of a sense of community to help new entrepreneurs get funded, assemble teams, raise profiles and help with biz dev, product, etc.

Today we announced that Techstars has acquired UP Global, which includes Startup Weekend and many other fantastic events and programs. Startup Weekend is my absolute favorite global event for entrepreneurship. All of the 10 companies in Techstars participated in the weekend and worked on something with the community called VoSnap.

I remember writing a blog post in 2008, post-financial crash, on how the recession was going to re-vitalize the city’s tech startup community, which would eventually help diversify the NYC economy. Startups are not immune to globalization and can accelerate growth if thinking globally from launch.

If you’re an Entrepreneur, you can do it from any place in the world. How important is education when I know I want to be an entrepreneur? When you are a young entrepreneur and you have a project (say a new age TV show) and you need to raise capital for the project. If you’re a young entrepreneur, than congrats!
