When we started IMVU in 2004, we could rely on a staggering amount of open source software that jumpstarted our initial product offering. Thats simply impossible on most platforms.

Leverage product development with open source and third parties. For example, early on at IMVU, we incorporated in tons of open source projects. The Extreme Programming folks call those "spikes", and generally don't check them in.) At least in strongly typed languages such as Java.
