However, there are lots of companies that are making money from open source and freemium models. A friend of mine has a company that builds open source applications in spaces that are a bit less innovative than Elgg, but they do very well financially through the packaging and support models.

So much of the focus was on how to produce usable software developers inside the four walls of a classroom. There was a CTO in the room who had a fifty plus person tech team and so I asked him, "How many of your developers learned their trade in the classroom versus being essentially self taught?". Answer: All self-taught.

The timing is perfect, there is more than a little overlap with Vivek Wadhwa’s guest post on venture capital earlier today. I don’t know any developers. There are only a tiny fraction of people who hit on all the right circumstances to go from prototype to hit in a straight trajectory. I need money for the servers.
