My conclusion: if you’re a software engineer, with good technical background and ability, you can pretty much write your own ticket in Southern California. cloud computing (Amazon AWS and EC2, etc.) For bonus points, make sure the back end uses Amazon EC2 and S3. Get involved in open source, as much as you can.

You need to hear this from someone who has used.Net extensively, and then happily walked away from it to go open source: You are a wanker. Full discloure, I am a former PHP, Perl, ColdFusion, ActionScript, VB.NET, ASP.NET and C# developer. It’s an *freaking open source*.net The list goes on and on.
