Two years ago I got the bug to do an online recruiting startup and I began the hunt to find a technical co-founder - a software engineer who works for no cash - to help me build my dream website. You may get a software engineer to start something for you, but they wont stick with the project when it gets difficult.

The other day, I took part in a forum about technology education in Brooklyn. There was a CTO in the room who had a fifty plus person tech team and so I asked him, "How many of your developers learned their trade in the classroom versus being essentially self taught?". What would the equivalent at a school look like?

The best composition is probably one engineer whose passion lies in the pixels on the screen and another engineer whose passion is making bits fly really fast through servers. is it really that the only people who can build great startups are engineers? Engineers don’t always have the best business ideas.

Do a curl (or your.NET equivalent) on each domain, and see how many are running a Windows server: I think you’ll find the fraction very small. My example: I have mainly programmed _by choice_ in Python, Ruby, Scala, Haskell, C# and currently I’m doing Java. It’s an *freaking open source*.net

When we started IMVU in 2004, we could rely on a staggering amount of open source software that jumpstarted our initial product offering. At IMVU, when wed hire a new engineer, we could get them to ship code to production on their first day, even if they had never programmed in PHP before. So heres to the team that built PHP.

I also know someone else who consulted me about his website idea. Nothing essential that I disagree with you in your post, but when read by other people with minimal software engineering experience, they can have too high expectations. I am a Ruby on Rails programmer and have written the first line of code for a few startups.
