Systems seem to randomly fail, and as soon as they are fixed, a new one falls over. Even worse, when it comes time to "fix it right" the team gets pushback from the business leaders, who want more features. After all, our startup is on a fixed budget. The second biggest form of waste is fixing bugs in software nobody wants.

It depends on how badly you need live support and guaranteed bug fixes. Your open source competitor is going to win when it comes to college students, hobbyists, and other groups where time is worth a lot less than licensing cost. Co-workers arent’ comfortable with commandeline/Tortoise. Maintaining it costs nothing.

Although there is cost and overhead associated with continuous deployment, the benefits are immense. leanstartup With so many startups in the room, I could see the stricken faces when I started to talk about the fact that most of us founders are pretty good at keeping people busy - but arent necessarily sure if were making progress.

Application performance can be directly mapped to hosting dollars, and for a start-up company in its infancy, hosting costs can be a pain point. The differences arent always that extreme, but in some cases, they might be. For database access tests, we considered dropping Cake to constrain our EC2 costs. Starting again with EC2.

Y Combinator is working to fix this. We chargedquite a lot for our software—about $140 per user per month—butit was at least a year before our revenues would have covered evenour paltry costs. If they think yourstartup is lame, arent they probably right? If theyre realproblems, fix them. Maybe, maybe not.
