However, there are lots of companies that are making money from open source and freemium models. A friend of mine has a company that builds open source applications in spaces that are a bit less innovative than Elgg, but they do very well financially through the packaging and support models.

I also know someone else who consulted me about his website idea. " And looking at the requirements, I didnt think it was difficult to find a programmer to develop that. Programmers, and certainly not the visionary founders, are the most qualified for that task. #6 THANK YOU!!! Most people have a basic idea.

When we started IMVU in 2004, we could rely on a staggering amount of open source software that jumpstarted our initial product offering. Although this was annoying for sysadmins, security consultants, and language purists (and for those who had proprietary modules that couldnt be bundled), it was a huge boon for developers.
