Down-and-In CTO’s are expected to solve really hard technical problems; Up-and-Out CTO’s are expected to explain to the rest of the world the value of the really hard technical problems their company has solved. There are two types of CTO’s: Up-and-Out, and Down-and-In.

They buy a lot of startups— more than most people realize, because they only announce a fraction of them. Googles example should cure the rest of the world of this idea. As the volume of startups increases, big companies will start to develop standardized procedures that make acquisitions little more work than hiring someone.
