At a salaried job making $80k plus benefits your time is worth around $55/hour. Even fewer can be installed in five minutes or less, even by an experienced software developer. All those design programs that insist on covering your screen with useless subwindows… I wonder how they successfully compete against no software.

If you’re looking for a designer, engineer, or biz marketing guy – go to meetups / conferences that those people would go to. I’m studying design. The only problem is I haven’t found a problem or an industry – web, enterprise software, green tech, etc – where I feel passionate. Product, product, product!

You can go without these expenses for a short time while in startup mode, but if you plan to build a company that’s sustainable in the long-run you’re going to need to cover these expenses before you think about collecting a salary.
