A lot of people ask me what it was like raising the Series A round for LinkedIn back in 2003. I thought I’d revisit it and share the story… First, you have to rewind mentally to early 2003. Ok, now you have the context for early 2003. He provided our initial seed funding to launch the website publicly on May 5, 2003.

Basically started as somebody of how do we take photos of cars and the pricing and descriptions of the cars, and put it all in one place, but then syndicate it. At what point did you feel like you outgrew your ability, you and your partners, I guess in this case, ability to actually run that company? They were very much a luxury item.

From the customer’s point of view, they would rather wait a little longer and have a better platform-specific solution, than simultaneously ship a generic product on all platforms. They had a couple experienced co-founders, including the now legendary Reed Hastings, but the problem was that they were stuck at about 300,000 customers.

And going even further back there have been a few random ones have been built before like Salesforce.com and e-tailer RedEnvelope (IPO’d in 2003 though now defunct as a company). Also all the big anchor companies that a startup might want to partner with at that time (eBay, Google, Oracle, Yahoo!, What’s Your Favorite Future?

As you may know, the title of this blog, OnlyOnce, comes from a blog post written by my friend and board member Fred Wilson from Union Square Ventures entitled You Are Only a First-Time CEO Once , which he wrote back in 2003 or 2004. That inspired me to create a blog for entrepreneurs and leaders.
