In 2008, we couldn’t find a technical co-founder for Yipit. Your service has to be secure, it has to scale immediately, you need PhD’s to help you develop algorithms and you’re probably applying for a few patents. The tech aspect is mainly writing and reading from a database and you might build on top of an API.

A given customer would have an entity URL that looked like this: customer://1234 Somewhere in your API, you have a way to access data about a given customer. Whichever API you use, URL-based sharding is very easy to understand. Then, whenever you want to have your system find the shard for a given entity, compose this name into a URL.
