Many people don’t realize that the majority of the monetization of the Internet originated in Los Angeles but was perfected in Silicon Valley. The monetization engine of the Internet that powers the most profitable business perhaps in history was invented and perfected in Los Angeles and is what you now know as Google Ad Words.

The “Infrastructure Phase” of the Internet … Before we had an Internet startup explosion we needed infrastructure which spawned the original tech startup community in Silicon Valley. Web Services, led by Amazon’s AWS, which reduced the costs a further 90%. But what is it we actually DO on the Internet?

There is all sorts of advice on the Internet about how to raise capital. I’ve raised in boom markets and when everybody thought the Internet was a fraud. It’s tempting to want to stay in your offices and fund raise via email or web conferencing. Of course much of it is conflicting. Press the flesh.

We were talking about a company, Factual (disclosure my firm is an investor), which was founded by one of LA’s most talented Internet entrepreneurs, Gil Elbaz , who as co-founder of Applied Semantics (purchased by pre-IPO Google for $102 million and now Google AdSense) is responsible for a large portion of the Internet’s monetization.
