That same year China fell to the communists under Mao Zedong, and the Nationalist government retreated to Taiwan. As tensions rose, there was a growing fear that the Soviets could invade and occupy all of Western Europe. In 1949, the Soviets exploded their first nuclear weapon and ended the U.S monopoly on atomic weaponry.
