I know that this all seems obvious now with the movements started by Steven Blank ( Four Steps of Epiphany ) with the whole Customer Development processes / Lean Startup movements also popularized by people like Eric Ries. Many people at a young startup are trying to manage their finances like the rest of their user base.

Nowadays I’m not a great coder, but in 12 months I learned how to rock in HTML/CSS, JS & Python. Especially because I could have used this time on marketing, sales and customer development, and actually helped our business move forward. They told me it was impossible to pick up coding. With that live, you’ll be able to show other smart engineers and advisors that you’re willing to take some risk and build something. If you believe in it – then finance whatever you can yourself.

It is right that Google and Facebook pride themselves on being engineering organizations (note - so did Microsoft). It is interesting to see the emphasis that both Twitter and Quora have put on product design, not just engineering. are just emerging for business people (customer development, business model generation,).
