It’s true the some VCs have started writing so many checks that they resemble stock pickers but the majority of us still have less than 10 board seats at any time and tend to go pretty deep so the result is that we care deeply about where we commit our time. The beauty of Silicon Valley and the ethos it has driven in all of us is acceptance of failure and a profound respect for those who at least try. We hired outside experts. Leadership over backbenchers? I wish I had 20% of her confidence, focus and leadership skills at 25. I have witnessed it working. It is safe.
