This required a repeatable and scalable sales process, which required a professional sales staff and a product stable enough that customers wouldn’t return it. If the founder was lucky, he got to stay as chairman or CTO. Schmidt had been the CEO of Novell and previously CTO of Sun Microsystems. Hire a CEO to Go Public.

But during the funding process we certainly asked whether Nick was open to hiring a US-based CEO so that Nick could focus on engineering prowess and leadership and not having to build out a sales, marketing & support organization in the US.
