Today, I went to an event in the city of Campbell to hear Matt Mickiewicz, Founder of SitePoint, Flippa, and 99Designs, talk about how he got started. A notable site is FaceSmash which sold for $30k the week the movie Social Network came out. Some vendors go bankrupt.

But when done well it can really help get a company going fast, professionally and without the founders having to give up much (if any) equity - or bankrupting themselves. The founders may believe they are onto such a good idea that they don’t want to give up any equity. Why bootstrap? Either way, bootstrapping is a viable model.

They write everything from assembly to jQuery, on PCs to mobile phones, doing hard core computer graphics to high level social networking. Big things, like obscuring the networking stack under so many countless layers of abstraction that it’s virtually impossible to even imagine what bytes are actually going over the wire.
