Many people don’t realize that the majority of the monetization of the Internet originated in Los Angeles but was perfected in Silicon Valley. The monetization engine of the Internet that powers the most profitable business perhaps in history was invented and perfected in Los Angeles and is what you now know as Google Ad Words.

A month or two before the QuickTime public announcement in May, the SuperMac hardware engineers (who had a great relationship with the QuickTime team at Apple) started a “ skunk works ” project. So SuperMac engineering also developed video compression software, called Cinepak. The software was idiot proof.

As a result, local universities here churn out thousands of new graduates each year who can spell Microsoft but understand nothing about proper software engineering. Silicon Valley is a great place for technology startups in no small part due to its culture of entrepreneurship and innovation. Culture creation is not easy.

they need to accept that the standardization found in conventional Silicon Valley-style fundraising is simply not a possibility. Everyone is trying to be a billion-dollar company that will eventually get acquired or go IPO. In that world, everyone is a Delaware C-Corp. It requires real financial, tax, legal, etc.

Finding great engineers is hard; figuring out whos good is even harder. For software engineers, I think this absolutely has to be a programming problem solved on a whiteboard. I have found this quite rare in engineers. Many of us engineers are strong introverts, without fantastic people skills.
