We had an interesting presentation at the LA CTO Forum by the CTO of a startup who chose Groovy / Grails as the framework for their startup. t prompted a good discussion around how CTOs go about choosing the programming language and framework for their startup. Of course, I'm not sure that anyone chooses Java alone.

The new FinTech Innovation Lab , an annual program run by the New York City Investment Fund and Accenture, had their launch event on Thursday night. This is definitely not the norm in accelerator programs; I’d be curious to know the logic. Previously CTO, Goldman Sachs. Java/Azure appliances will come in.

These are Java (from Sun),NET (from Microsoft), and three Open Source options: PHP, Python and Ruby. Java stands alone from the four others.

But it will definitely raise questions during the phone screen, for reasons that are best explained by simile: Programming with.NET is like cooking in a McDonalds kitchen. Do a curl (or your.NET equivalent) on each domain, and see how many are running a Windows server: I think you’ll find the fraction very small.

For example, I have repeatedly taught PHP to complete novices in several companies, including people who had never before programmed at all. Thats simply impossible on most platforms.
