I do disagree about two other points: First, this isn't the "quora rockstar engineer" perspective. It's my perspective as well and I'm not a software engineer let alone a rockstar. Sooner or later, using PHP or RoR or.Net or some Java framework, that 0.5x Leadership and management ability.

Scoping the prpject down to something manageable is really hard. I am starting a big web project, and have been thinking about how to break it down into manageable chunks. Dont go C or Java, python is good for prototyping and easier to learn. Especially the first section. I havent been able to do that on any of my projects yet!
