" With Ruby/Rails, Groovy/Grails and many other language/framework choices, some aspects of development are significantly faster. They start with lots of other things.

Most networking events tend to either focus on specific technologies (PHP,Net, C#, Microsoft, LAMP, MySQL, Open Source, Hadoop, Java, etc.) Part of the reason is that when I look at the CTOs, we see that the industries (games, entertainment, aerospace, retail, etc.), or focused on industry or type of company. But not really CTO events.

Important Implications Well I'm currently working with startup founders on their systems in JRuby, Django, PHP and Java. I was also surprised by the performance improvement on dedicated hardware as compared to EC2 instances of roughly 10x. Several of these are B2B applications with relatively smaller audiences.

PIM based on Java that would be up-to-date on all your devices. Server and client in Java. Java as a platform wasn't ready to deliver on client side. Some other points - LAMP,Net, Java - doesn't make much difference. Controls - reverse engineered Quicken file format - sold to Microsoft for import into Microsoft Money.
