Besides, there were a limited number of places where I could do my job in venture capital anyway—and while I might be a go to for a pitch from super early stage pre-seed and seed founders looking for quick answers and decisive term sheets in New York City, the reality is that I would be pretty far down the list in the Valley.

We had many term sheets (it was 1999 and we had a pulse) and we were deciding which one to take. We were trying to optimize around a few criteria: price, size of round, number of syndicate partners and, of course, terms. We ended up agreeing a term sheet for $16.5 6 weeks’ later he didn’t have other term sheets.

That’s why I continue to be bullish on Silicon Valley and perhaps not so bullish on Miami, despite the great progress that city has made recently. I think a lot of entrepreneurs don’t fully understand how venture capital works. It’s not like after completing the class I was prepared to negotiate a term sheet.
