Anyone who’s been around me for the past 6-12 months has been inundated with my evangelism of eCommerce in general and Drupal + PHP. But, there is a serious gap in the discipline, number of developers and community around real software development here. Drupal has a worldwide engine of real software discipline.

My conclusion: if you’re a software engineer, with good technical background and ability, you can pretty much write your own ticket in Southern California. Show you can code in any number of popular web technologies, such as Ruby on Rails, PHP, Python, etc. Why do I say that? technologies (interactivity UI etc.).

My example: I have mainly programmed _by choice_ in Python, Ruby, Scala, Haskell, C# and currently I’m doing Java. Full discloure, I am a former PHP, Perl, ColdFusion, ActionScript, VB.NET, ASP.NET and C# developer. I currently work in information security, and I help teach developers how to write better, more secure code.

I do disagree about two other points: First, this isn't the "quora rockstar engineer" perspective. It's my perspective as well and I'm not a software engineer let alone a rockstar. When Linus started what later on became Linux, he was at best a wet behind the ears developer.

Weve built Sandcastle specifically for an entrepreneur with an idea, who is not a developer. Sandcastle is a software development service for entrepreneurs. Nothing essential that I disagree with you in your post, but when read by other people with minimal software engineering experience, they can have too high expectations.
