It was the first company to do “paid search&# back when Larry & Sergey were saying they would never do it. In fact, their affiliate partners dissuaded them from doing so. So when Google started pushing AdSense (ads for affiliate or 3rd party sites) they had a HUGE cost advantage. Maybe even as powerful as search.

Including future cancellations, they’ll need to sign up a total of 2000 customers to net 1666. Not many search terms have that many impressions even over 3 years. If there are 10 affiliate-marketers who you can get to shill for you, and each can cause 10 customers to sign up per month, this company could get to their goal.

Within a matter of months we had created a course with over 1,000 paying members and an income stream in excess of $20,000 a month after affiliate commissions and expenses came out. Instead we focused on smaller promotions with individual affiliates and relied on existing traffic streams, such as this blog, to attract new members.

One of our prior investments was an e-commerce company that grew primarily through organic search. I was an early employee at PayPal and back in the 2000-2001 timeframe, and we ended up taking a fairly significant amount of strategic investment (tens of millions of $) from various banks in the US, Europe, and Asia.
