On Tuesday Los Angeles will elect a new mayor. I’d love to see a mayor in Los Angeles who does, too. In 2010 the City of Los Angeles started trying to crack down on tax receipts of Internet startups allocating them to the least favorable gross-receipts tax bracket taking up their city tax by 500%.

In 2001 companies IPO’d very quickly if they were working, by 2011 IPOs had slowed down to the point that in 2013 Aileen Lee of Cowboy Ventures astutely called billion-dollar outcomes “unicorns.” At Upfront we have always done 40% of our investing in Greater Los Angeles and it’s precisely for this reason.

He came to the United States in 2001 to study Software Engineering at Auburn University. The world had just gone into crisis and I was in a period of reflection reminiscent of September 2001. It was also in a group of about 15 people in law offices in Los Angeles. I hope that didn’t have a stature of limitation!

Drupal is now driving some of the largest and most critical websites in the world, including The White House, The Oscars, Twitter, Mercedes Benz, Warner Music Group, The Louvre Museum, The City of Los Angeles and Stanford University. This lasted from about 2001-2004. I shall be looking to replicate this in Los Angeles. Founded in Sunnyvale, CA in 2001. This probably wasn’t a fun period of time for a new VC but nonetheless probably made Mike stronger than having started in 1997. I’ve already started the business modeling.

There are various models of this but amongst the most successful I’ve seen executed is FabFitFun , based in Los Angeles. There is another form of curation that’s really powerful and that’s when you want a provider to help you actually choose products that they feel you’ll enjoy.

Though after the dotcom collapse of 2000-2001, there are many more than there were! I also run a small firm that provides CTO level help to start-ups in Los Angeles and Seattle. In Los Angeles, there are quite a few consulting CTOs. Why are consulting CTOs so scarce? Perhaps the more failures, the better?
