The two companies had been working together for a while, especially as both are deeply embedded within the Ruby on Rails developer community, with a strong following for their respective offerings. As an Advisor to thoughtbot the past couple years, I’ve come to place a lot of weight and trust in Chad’s opinion.

Heres a revised version of what I emailed in response, garnered while building OtherInbox and other Rails apps: First and foremost, I find Rails itself to be very useful for building a product for a lean startup; the expressiveness of Ruby and the conventions of Rails help developers more quickly build a minimum viable product.

You may not know this but when we first started, we bootstrapped the business by touring around the Southeast hosting kids coding camps. If you can get an 9 year old writing simple Ruby programs, launching websites, and generally understanding how technology can be used to solve problems, that’s a pretty exciting thing.

If your developer knows ruby-on-rails but doesn’t care about the application you are creating, then there is no guarantee that their work will be as precise or consistent as you need – or that they will go the extra mile. Just like in basketball, there are the various positions because each team member has their own set of skills.
