Our last fund was $200 million but as you may already know since we raised that fund we added new partners Greg Bettinelli and Kara Nortman and Venture Partner Hamet Watt – all of whom are busy looking at new deals for the firm in addition to Yves Sisteron (the founder), Steven Dietz (also part of founding team) and myself.

Tens of thousands visit Austin every year for the Austin City Limits Music Festival. Are they drawn to Texas or moving away from California? It’s like a dam has broken and now there is a flood of new entrepreneurs, investors, and big companies moving to Texas. Texas exported more than California and New York combined in 2019.

I had a very enjoyable day in Cincinnati meeting many local entrepreneurs, angels and accelerators. I was here to see one of our LPs (limited partners are the people who invest money in VC funds) called Fort Washington. My ride picked me up this morning at 3.30am California time. I hate being away from them. Or a Skype.

– I spoke about GRP’s recent exit of Ulta in which we returned $320 million to our limited partners. If you’re an entrepreneur, all else equal you prefer convertible debt because the deal is priced at a later stage when you’re worth more. Great exit. - Finally we covered this weeks deals.

The question some of our limited partners ask us is, “Why?”. Additionally, the Canadian government has significantly more rational immigration policies for foreign entrepreneurs than America, encouraging talented people globally to come to Canada. We are aware of only one other U.S. now BlackBerry Ltd., ff VC company.

Entrepreneur-in-Residence After SuperMac I had been approached by one of our venture investors to be an entrepreneur in residence (EIR), a Silicon Valley phrase which says one thing but means another. I offered to introduce him to the firm whose Entrepreneur-in-Residence offer I had just accepted.

Their VC firm, In-Q-Tel , has been in business for 10 years, and like most VC firms they have an annual event where they show off their new portfolio companies to their limited partners and other VC partners. And I could have sworn they all had the same badge.)
