It took the idea of Customer Development and made it accessible to a whole new audience. A good way to think about market segment is by thinking about fishing.

Marketing requires a multi-channel approach. Even startups with a lean marketing strategy invest in at least two or three channels. This affects how you personalize content, creative, and the channels you use to reach them. But this can result in data being stored in silos. The same treatment applies to retention.

In companies this would be product line extensions, more efficient supply chain, new distribution channels. Note that they plan a trip to San Diego to visit the customer. To these Horizon 1 leader’s, innovation is often considered an extension of what they already do today.
